Island Eco is a social entrepreneurship, doing business and implementing projects in rural electrification and renewable energy in the Marshall Islands since 2001. Its mission and the goals are in line with the National Energy Plan, which strives for 20% of energy to come from renewable sources by 2020.

Island Eco does it all- we develop, install, maintain, and provide quality equipment for renewable energy systems. Our customers include individuals, local and national governments, and community groups. Our renewable energy store and project office is conveniently located at the center of Majuro, and we also have a lagoon-side facility for training outside of town in Ajeltake. We started as a family run solar PV business, and have since grown to include services such as:

• Installing small and medium scale power systems in remote areas
• Providing renewable energy for community development projects
• Offering technical advice and training, with a focus on training local women and youth
• Carrying out research on how electrification projects can best serve the people
• Supplying quality renewable energy products from Europe, Asia, and the United States
• Providing internships and training opportunities

STARTING OUT AS A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS

Over the past five years, Island Eco has been mostly project-based, and has moved away from the commercial model. In fact, we are currently expanding our project based team for our most recent successful grant projects, focused on electrification and refrigeration to alleviate hardships and impacts from hazards in the Marshall Islands.

Our most notable achievements to date include having:

• Installed 194 USDA-funded household solar powered lighting and refrigeration units on Utrok, Namdrik, Aur, Likeap and Ailinglaplap Atolls
• Published the Marshallese Solar Training Manual, written in both English and Marshallese, and the corresponding animated training video
• Designed and constructed a demonstration house with 4.2kW off- grid power system at Majuro Atoll
• Set up a reverse osmosis unit in Majuro, in order to provide clean and safe drinking water.  It was then transported to Jaluit atoll to provide water during a natural disaster (drought) declared in 2015.
• Installed and provided training for 25 solar powered freezers in outer atoll health clinics
• Provided 66 solar powered street and traffic lights for Majuro local government
• Provided numerous customized household solar power systems including training for owners
• Surveyed solar PV users on outer islands to understand the needs of communities
• Conducted water quality and management surveys
• Established the Marshall Islands Earthquake Research Station
