The Marshall Islands consists of 29 atolls and 5 islands, the majority of which are not electrified, have an unreliable energy source, and pay very high fuel costs. In addition, income levels are low and communities are extremely remote, with small populations, long distances between each atoll, and unreliable transportation.

Island Eco is a social entrepreneurship, doing business and implementing projects in rural electrification and renewable energy in the Marshall Islands since 2001. Its mission and the goals are in line with the National Energy Plan, which strives for 20% of energy to come from renewable sources by 2020.
